Love Your Nest

Maxwell-model-3A

Did you know that every Maxwell apartment unit comes with a Nest Learning Thermostat?  It’s just another way that we differentiate ourselves from the rest, simply by offering our residents a programmable thermostat that is just as beneficial for them as it is for our environment.

Did you know that The Maxwell is a LEED® Gold certified building?

What is a Nest Thermostat?

It’s Nest Sense technology learns about you and your home and begins to optimize your home’s energy use based on your habits.

Love Your Nest

Some of our favorite features of the Nest Learning Thermostat include:

Nest Thermostats can save up to HALF of your home’s energy bill!  As you teach it the most efficient temperature settings, after a few days the Nest Thermostat will start setting it on its own.

There is virtually no set-up time, just start using your thermostat as you normally would and it does the rest!  And as you change your habits from season to season, the Nest knows to follow.

With the Auto Away feature, your Nest Thermostat will automatically turn itself down when it senses you leave and back up when you get home.  It’s great for when you’re just running errands or away on vacation.

Take Nest on the go with you!  With the mobile app, you can control your thermostat from anywhere!

The Nest Leaf might be our favorite part, any time a little leaf shows up on your Nest Thermostat, you know that you’re saving energy.

LEED Gold Certified

The Maxwell offers so many features that make it different than all of the other apartments out there. A big part of that being that we here at The Maxwell promise to provide a home that’s equally as good to our residents as it is to the environment around it.

We are so excited to announce that The Maxwell is now a LEED® Gold certified building! And being LEED® certified is something that has been very important to us since the start. It allows us to demonstrate that our building is truly “green.”

So, what does all of this mean?

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a certification given by The Green Building Certification Institute. There is a scorecard in which our “project,” The Maxwell, has been rated on in the following categories:

Transportation:
The Maxwell is served by 16 bus lines within one quarter mile walking distance of the building.

Water Consumption:
We are 51.1% more water efficient than the average building. Inside the building, we used low-flow faucets, showers and low-flush water closets, reducing water consumption by 31% compared to the average building.

Energy Efficiency:
We have achieved energy cost savings of 29.2% because of the energy efficiency measures incorporated into The Maxwell building design, including reduced interior lighting power density and high efficiency air source heat pumps.

Renewable Energy:
We match our consumption with renewable energy credits! We have purchased Green-e accredited Tradable Renewable Certificates (RECs) equal to 100% of the predicted annual electrical consumption over a 2-year period.

Waste Management:
The Maxwell project has diverted 76.67% of on-site generated construction waste from landfill.

Recycled Content:
21.47% of the total building materials content, by value, have been manufactured using recycled materials. 26.4% of the total building materials value includes building materials and/or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site.

Beyond these categories defined by LEED®, and probably most appealing to our residents, every unit in The Maxwell also features ENERGY STAR® appliances and Nest Learning Thermostats.  You can read more about these two features below.

Maxwell model # 1

ENERGY STAR® appliances: The Maxwell features appliances that have received ENERGY STAR® certification, which is a government-backed symbol for energy-efficiency. Having ENERGY STAR® appliances helps us to save our residents high energy costs as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful pollutants.

Nest learning thermostats: Nest Thermostats can save up to half of a home’s energy bill, simply by having a “programmed” thermostat. The nice part about what Nest has done with their Learning Thermostat is that you simply use your thermostat as you normally would and it does the rest. It’s Nest Sense technology learns about you and your home and begins to optimize your home’s energy use based on your habits. We think our residents agree with us in thinking it’s pretty awesome! Fun Fact: It was co-designed by Apple engineers!

“Timeless Handsome Feel” – An Interview With The Maxwell’s Interior Designer

Here at The Maxwell, style is important to us, and we want our residents (and visitors too) to feel that the second the walk in through our doors.  That’s why we turned to RD Jones Interior Design Team to help us achieve the modern style home decor that we wanted to bring to The Maxwell.

We recently spoke with designer and Managing Partner of RD Jones, Bernard Holaider, about his experience designing and decorating The Maxwell apartments and how he helped us achieve “Modern Luxury.”  Read below for our full interview about where he draws inspiration from, what he enjoyed most about working with us and how renters can easily incorporate similar styling into their own home decor.

What are the three most important elements you believe to be in home design?

BH:  I believe that we all need to feel comfortable with in our home environments.  I believe in purchasing the best quality sofa & lounge chair and bed that you can afford.  The remaining items can come and go, but always do lots of research on selecting the right sofa or bed.  And, color – I like color, but I also like to not overuse it.  I prefer to use color in things like rugs, art, pillows & accessories – Keep the basics neutral or dark and then just “splash” the color.

What was the theory behind the design of the Maxwell apartments and where did you draw inspiration for it?

BH:  It was “Modern Luxury,” with lots of fun.  A phrase that comes to mind is, “Timeless Handsome Feel.”   The inspiration came from all the small “Boutique” style hotels that I enjoy spending time in in cities such as Santa Fe, NM, NYC, Savannah GA, and Miami.

Speaking of, what does “modern” mean to you in terms of design and style?

BH:  Modern means clean simple lines that can withstand years of use.

How can renters incorporate a similar style in their own homes?

BH:  Whether you rent or own, buy what you like.  It can be a rug from India, a lamp from Asia, a sofa from USA and you mix them all.  Don’t feel like you have to buy things that all match perfectly.  Create your own style.  Own it.  Also, simple touches like a modern rug can be inspired from a painting or even a swatch of fabric really bring a room to life.  Or, a luxurious fabric or leather can add that upscale look without breaking the bank.  And a splash of color on just one wall can create some drama in any room.  These little touches can give you home a more modern and upscale, “hotel” feel.

What did you, personally, enjoy most about decorating the interior of the Maxwell?

BH:  We had a great client who trusted us and believed in my vision – Modern Luxury.  We also had a great time selecting all the durable finishes, furniture selections as well as the fabrics.  Especially fun was finding the sculptures, art & accessories that were rich in color and texture.

Pet Friendly Activities in Arlington

Did you know that The Maxwell is not only FULL of luxury apartments for rent, but, more importantly, pet-friendly* luxury apartments?  We know Ballstonians love their pets just as much as we do (come by to meet The Maxwell “pet,” Max!), so we wanted to make sure that they felt welcome.  At The Maxwell, we know you and your pets will love our outdoor, grass area for walking and playing fetch, but there are so much many more awesome things to do with your pets in Ballston outside of the Maxwell too.

While you’re at work, you can let WOOFS! Dog Training Center work their magic with your smart pups at their Ballston location (4241 N Pershing Drive).  With a wide range of services offered, such as training, doggy play dates, sleepovers (boarding), and even workout classes that you can take with your pup (such as agility training, speed training and more), there is something for everyone to take advantage of at WOOFS!

Arlington in its self is super dog-friendly, as there are eight off-leash dog parks in Arlington, VA.  The Clarendon Dog Park is relatively new, fenced in and features a mulch-covered ground to reduce mud.  But just three miles away from The Maxwell Apartments is the Shirlington Dog Park.  Its claim to fame is the open gate leading to a stream, perfect for your water-loving pups to play in.  That, plus separate parks for small and big dogs, are what make it a local favorite.

If you’re in need of some new home décor, you could pay a visit to one of the Arlington-local pet photographers, like All Paws Pet Photography or Brad Novak Pet Photography, to turn your beloved furry friends into art!  With up to 1,264 sq. ft. in your new apartment at The Maxwell, you’ll have plenty of wall space to decorate.

You can also take your dog out for a special treat at a local dog bakery.  Dogma Gourmet Dog Bakery & Boutique, located just two miles from The Maxwell, makes all of their healthy dog treats in-store, only using human-grade ingredients.  They also offer grooming services as well!  It’s a great way to “kill two birds with one stone,” making pet care easier than ever for a busy dog owner.

*Please contact our Property Management here to learn about our pet restrictions.
