LEED Gold Certified

The Maxwell offers so many features that make it different than all of the other apartments out there. A big part of that being that we here at The Maxwell promise to provide a home that’s equally as good to our residents as it is to the environment around it.

We are so excited to announce that The Maxwell is now a LEED® Gold certified building! And being LEED® certified is something that has been very important to us since the start. It allows us to demonstrate that our building is truly “green.”

So, what does all of this mean?

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a certification given by The Green Building Certification Institute. There is a scorecard in which our “project,” The Maxwell, has been rated on in the following categories:

Transportation:
The Maxwell is served by 16 bus lines within one quarter mile walking distance of the building.

Water Consumption:
We are 51.1% more water efficient than the average building. Inside the building, we used low-flow faucets, showers and low-flush water closets, reducing water consumption by 31% compared to the average building.

Energy Efficiency:
We have achieved energy cost savings of 29.2% because of the energy efficiency measures incorporated into The Maxwell building design, including reduced interior lighting power density and high efficiency air source heat pumps.

Renewable Energy:
We match our consumption with renewable energy credits! We have purchased Green-e accredited Tradable Renewable Certificates (RECs) equal to 100% of the predicted annual electrical consumption over a 2-year period.

Waste Management:
The Maxwell project has diverted 76.67% of on-site generated construction waste from landfill.

Recycled Content:
21.47% of the total building materials content, by value, have been manufactured using recycled materials. 26.4% of the total building materials value includes building materials and/or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site.

Beyond these categories defined by LEED®, and probably most appealing to our residents, every unit in The Maxwell also features ENERGY STAR® appliances and Nest Learning Thermostats.  You can read more about these two features below.

ENERGY STAR® appliances: The Maxwell features appliances that have received ENERGY STAR® certification, which is a government-backed symbol for energy-efficiency. Having ENERGY STAR® appliances helps us to save our residents high energy costs as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful pollutants.

Nest learning thermostats: Nest Thermostats can save up to half of a home’s energy bill, simply by having a “programmed” thermostat. The nice part about what Nest has done with their Learning Thermostat is that you simply use your thermostat as you normally would and it does the rest. It’s Nest Sense technology learns about you and your home and begins to optimize your home’s energy use based on your habits. We think our residents agree with us in thinking it’s pretty awesome! Fun Fact: It was co-designed by Apple engineers!

Meet One of The Maxwell’s ‘Largest’ Amenities for a Sushi Making Party

Here at The Maxwell, residents have full access to all of our on-site amenities intended to really take their lifestyle here in Ballston to the next level.  The Maxwell offers a meeting room for working or studying, a billiards table for play, reading nooks and more, all designed to enhance our residents overall living experience during their time here with us (We call it The Dwelling).

When you come visit us, one of their first things you might notice is the large table in our first floor common area.  The table seats 10 comfortably and there’s so many different ways that our residents can use this large table top space; like crafting, happy hours, and business meetings, to name a few.

Recently, we invited some of our favorite local area bloggers in to give it a test drive.  Together with local sushi restaurant owner and head chef of Sushi Rock, the team here at the Maxwell and the bloggers learned how to roll their own sushi from the masters and each took home their own sushi-making kit from Whole Foods, courtesy of The Maxwell.

Our residents are pretty awesome and we can’t wait to see what other ideas they come up with for the Maxwell table.  But for now, we leave you with some tips for making your own sushi, straight from the expert himself:

1. You must cook your rice in a special Rice Vinegar to get that sticky consistency.  You can either buy Sushi Rice Vinegar at your local Asian supermarket. Or, you can simply combine rice vinegar, sugar and salt in a pot and bring it to a boil until all of the sugar and salt has dissolved.  Also when buying your rice, you want a medium size thickness in your rice (called ‘Shari’ at the grocery store).

2. When you roll your sushi, you should put the shiny side of the seaweed paper facing down.  Then, use a tennis ball size of rice to make a 6-piece roll.

3. Wrap your sushi-rolling device in plastic wrap to ensure that your sushi doesn’t stick to it and you get a nice, clean roll.  You can wipe down the plastic wrap and your knife (that you’re going to use to cut up your roll) with cold water to ensure it really doesn’t stick.

4. Presentation is key!  Don’t forget to garnish your roll with freshly sliced ginger and wasabi.
