Where to Toast a Special Occasion Near The Maxwell: Water & Wall in Arlington

Tim Ma had a successful career in engineering, but he gave it all up to pursue a career in the restaurant business. He and his wife, Joey Hernandez, pursued culinary studies in New York City, then worked in kitchens in New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They returned to their home in Northern Virginia in 2009, and opened Water & Wall in 2013.

The dining room sets an elegant tone with its brick walls, floor to ceiling windows, and modern light fixtures. The bar area is set off by translucent curtains, echoing the airy atmosphere in the dining room. For a more intimate dining experience, ask for one of the curved red booths outside the main room, and you’ll feel like you’re in a private room all your own. Standout dishes on the menu include the crispy fried cauliflower appetizer, duck confit that’s so tender it falls off the bone, and bread pudding for dessert.
