In less than two years, Republic Kitchen and Bar in Ballston has made a strong impression on Arlington locals. Just across the street from Liberty Center, this bright, inviting restaurant exudes a casual yet classy atmosphere. The menu, on the other hand, centers around “contemporary comfort food” and features traditional burgers, steak, chicken, and seafood with just a hint of flair. The beer list places an emphasis on craft brews, so you’ll find lots of local breweries represented.

The atmosphere is relaxed, yet modern, and it is not uncommon to see someone at the bar in a t-shirt and jeans watching the game next to a suit-wearing neighbor on the next stool. Founded in 1997 by Souheil and Rima Kodsi, Layalina is a family-owned and -operated restaurant that specializes in Lebanese and Syrian cuisine. Set in a small Arlington strip mall, this place’s humble exterior might not look like much, but step inside and you’ll be transported into an environment of traditional Lebanese charm and splendor. Tim Ma had a successful career in engineering, but he gave it all up to pursue a career in the restaurant business. He and his wife, Joey Hernandez, pursued culinary studies in New York City, then worked in kitchens in New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They returned to their home in Northern Virginia in 2009, and opened Water & Wall in 2013.

The dining room sets an elegant tone with its brick walls, floor to ceiling windows, and modern light fixtures. The bar area is set off by translucent curtains, echoing the airy atmosphere in the dining room. For a more intimate dining experience, ask for one of the curved red booths outside the main room, and you’ll feel like you’re in a private room all your own. Standout dishes on the menu include the crispy fried cauliflower appetizer, duck confit that’s so tender it falls off the bone, and bread pudding for dessert.
