Don’t Miss the Hilarious Performance of “Freaky Friday” at Signature Theatre from October 6 – November 20

Check out one of your favorite childhood movies in play form with Freaky Friday at the Gulf Theater! Performances run from October 4 through November 20 and feature the same hilarious plot about a mother and teenage daughter who magically switch bodies.

There’s really no better place to see a great local play than at the Signature Theatre. It’s so cozy and intimate, you won’t find a bad seat here. In fact, some of the seats are so good the actors might pull you up into the action (it’s happened before!) Get there early as food is not allowed in the theater, but a nice café in the lobby offers dining options and the neighborhood is peppered with tasty restaurants to check out. If you can’t make it to this show, check the Signature Theatre’s website often as they always have a new and exciting lineup of performances for every taste.

Looking for a Way to Spread Holiday Cheer at The Maxwell? Visit Santa at the Ballston Common Mall in Arlington!

Visiting Santa at the Ballston Common Mall is a great way to get your brood in the holiday spirit near The Maxwell, whether your little ones are on two legs or, the case of pet parents, four! Sitting on Santa’s lap is an annual tradition that many children look forward to, and no matter how busy your schedule, there are a number of dates throughout the month of December when you and your family can chat with Saint Nick himself.

Stop in and get a professional photo taken with your child on Santa’s lap, or pay a bit less to take your own photo on a smartphone or digital camera. If you have pets, there are certain times of the day when you can bring your furry friends in to see Santa, as well. All proceeds from this holiday event go to the Arlington Jaycees, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, and other local charities.

Stay Cool, Arlington.

On Monday temperatures we’re in the high 90’s here in the DMV and even a heat advisory was issued for our area!  With temperatures not expected to lessen any time soon, we’re always on the hunt for new ways to keep cool in the summer heat.  Whether it’s a having a cold drink to cool down or finding fun, indoor activities to do on the weekends, we rounded up a list of what you can do in Arlington (and it’s surrounding area).

Try a Cold Press Juice for Lunch – Not only is it healthy and a great source of vitamins, but a cold press juice is super refreshing on a hot day.   You can get one at places like Sweetgreen, SouthBlock and Jrink Juicery in the Arlington, VA area.

Sign Up for PaintNite – With heat advisories, experts typically advise that you stay indoors to avoid the high temperatures entirely which sounds like a total bummer in the midst of summertime.  One of our favorite indoor activities though is PaintNite.  You just bring your friends and have a few cocktails and they provide everything you need to create your own masterpiece to take home with you.

Head to The BEACH – No sunscreen is required at the new interactive installation at the National Building Museum called The BEACH.  The new contained exhibit covers 10,000 square feet and includes an “ocean” of nearly one million recyclable translucent plastic balls.  It’s also fully equipped with beach chairs and umbrellas!

Get an Indoor Workout – It can be a struggle to get in a good workout on a summer day – It can either be too hot for anything active outdoors, such as bike riding or hiking, but it’s equally as unappealing to be stuck in a gym on a bright and sunny day.  So use the heat advisory as a way to try a new (indoor) workout class, like solidcore in Ballston.  You can read more about solidcore here and Maxwell Residents can enjoy a discount on a 3-class package.  Just email meg@solidcoreva.co to redeem!

Watch a Movie at Sunset – During a heat advisory, it’s suggested to only go out after the sun goes down.  What is there fun to do after the sun goes down you ask?  Head to a “drive-in” movie night!  There are so many places offering (some free!) sunset movies series this summer, such as the Sunset Cinema, NoMA Summer Screen, Crystal Screen, Movies On The Potomac, and Rosslyn Outdoor Film Fest.

What are some ways that you’re staying cool this summer?  Tweet us, tell us on Facebook or leave a comment below!  We would love to hear from you.  #LiveWellMaxwell

Seven Ways To Spoil Mom This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and we wanted to help you think of some fun, new ways to celebrate with her on her special day.  Read on for seven ideas for Mother’s Day this year:

1. Help Mom plant her spring garden.

Visit your local nursery together or farmer’s market and pick up the tab on her favorite buds.  Then, go home and help her plant them!  We’ve listed some of our favorite farmer’s markets in our area here for your reference.

2. This is an obvious one, but never fails: Spa Day

Because there’s no better way to bond than over a relaxing trip to the spa together, surprise her with an appointment at the nearest spa.  Plus, we’re sure she would appreciate a little “me time.”

3. Try out a new restaurant & pick up the tab.

There are so many great new restaurants opening up all the time in the DC-area and according to a recent study by Sperling’s BestPlaces, 50% of Moms want to go out to eat with their family on Mother’s Day.  Some of our local favorites, here in Ballston, that we recommend trying out are SER and Rustico.

4. Treat her to a new, fun workout class.

Is your Mom the work-out queen, or just loves a good mind and body detox?  Take her on a date to SolidCore or Yoga On The Mall this weekend.

5. Take Mom to the ball park.

The National’s play the Brave’s this weekend at 1:35pm.  Get your tickets here!

6. Bring the pups along!

If your Mom is a dog-lover, take her and her furry friend to one of the local dog parks.  We compiled a good list of pet-friendly activities in Arlington here.

7.  Take Mom out for shopping and a movie.

Pick your mom up for a fun day of shopping at Ballston Mall, followed by a movie at the Regal Cinemas right next door.

2015 Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC

Every year, hundreds of tourists from all over the world, plus local residents, travel to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC to see the cherry blossom trees during the Cherry Blossom Festival.  The festival is a celebration of the gift of the cherry blossoms from Japan and is open to the public and free to attend.  This year’s event begins today, March 20th, and lasts through April 12th.  Whether it’s your first time attending the event or not, here are some helpful hints that we think will ensure smooth sailing during your trip the 2015 Cherry Blossom Festival.

Peak Bloom:  It’s always hard to tell, but experts say that the Peak Bloom Date is when 70% of the trees have blossomed.  Surrounding the Peak Bloom Date is the Blooming Period, before more than 20% of the petals fall and leaves appear which typically lasts about 14 days.  Just from taking a look at past year’s bloom schedules, it appears the best time to go would be between the weekends of March 20 – April 3 (but of course, we’re no experts).

Transportation: The closest Metro station to the Tidal Basin is the Smithsonian Metro Station and from there it’s about a 10 minute walk.  There is no designated Cherry Blossom Festival parking, and parking is very limited in the area as well, so the Metro is usually the easiest way to get there.  If you’re leaving from The Maxwell, simply hop on the Orange line to get there.

Once Your There:  Besides walking the Tidal Basin on foot, you’ll also have the option to experience the cherry blossoms by paddle boat.  The Tidal Basin Boathouse is located at 1501 Maine Ave. SW and offers boat rides for $12-24 per hour, between the hours of 10 AM and 12 PM.  We recommend that reserve your boats in advance online, to ensure boat availably: http://www.tidalbasinpaddleboats.com/reservations.html

After-Party:  Since you’re most likely traveling a little ways to see the cherry blossoms, you’ll want to make sure to have some other activities planned to do while in Washington DC.  Beyond the various events the festival puts on, there are many local restaurants and bars that celebrate the festival with great specials and deals that are worth checking out.  For example, Mari Vanna DC will be offering $5 cherry pies, $5 cherry vodka shots and $5 cherry cocktails during the festival.  We love this article about 10 ways to eat and drink your way through the festival, plus you can read more about related events on the Festival’s website here: http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/

Have fun and be sure to share your pictures with us on social media using the hashtag #LiveWellMaxwell!
